Title

BIOVIA Synchronized Biannual Releases and Release Versioning

Description

BIOVIA is introducing a new biannual release cadence and new release versioning that is synchronized across all BIOVIA Foundation-based products.

Releases for all BIOVIA products will now occur twice per year in May and November.  Releases will adopt year-based numbering based on the following calendar year.  For example the November 2015 release “BIOVIA Foundation 2016”, “BIOVIA Workbook 2016.”  The second release in any calendar year will append R2 to the year-based name, for example “BIOVIA Foundation 2016 R2” or “BIOVIA Workbook 2016 R2.”

FAQ:

Q:  What is the new release cadence?
A:  Releases for most of the BIOVIA portfolio, including all that are BIOVIA Foundation-based products, will occur twice annually, starting in November 2015 with the “2016 release.”  Releases will occur in May and November of each year.  Calendar year 2016 will have two synchronized releases the “2017 release” and the “2017 R2 release.”

Q:  What is the product release name change?
A:  Releases will adopt year-based numbering based on the following calendar year.  For example “BIOVIA Foundation 2016”, “BIOVIA Workbook 2016.”  The second release in any calendar year will append R2, for example “BIOVIA Foundation 2016 R2” or “BIOVIA Workbook 2016 R2.”

Q:  What products are included in the synchronized releases?
A:  All products based on BIOVIA Foundation will be released twice annually, which includes:

  • All Collaborative Science Products
  • All Unified Lab Portfolio Products
Other BIOVIA products may also be synchronized.

Q:  What products are not included in the synchronized releases?
A:  QUMAS and ScienceCloud are not included in the synchronized releases and year-based numbering.  Discoverant is not currently based on BIOVIA Foundation, but will also be part of the synchronized release and numbering.

Q:  What is the benefit of this change?
A:  Benefits include a predictable release schedule, and compatibility testing for all products in the release. Also, the new numbering makes it clear which products were tested and released together and the fixed release cadence provides customers with an opportunity to plan upgrades for as many years forward as they would like.

Q:  Can customers choose which releases they take?
A:  Yes, customers can choose which releases they want to take.  They can choose to only upgrade when they are ready. Customers may choose to skip releases as needed and move directly to the latest release when they are ready to upgrade.

Q:  Will there be any releases in between the two annual releases? For example, Notebook currently has a higher frequency cycle.
A:  Existing fix and service pack schedules will continue.  Products built upon BIOVIA Foundation will only be released twice per year with major new features/functionality.

Q:  Are there any changers to the Service Pack (SP) or Hotfix (HF) procedures?
A:  No, the current Hotfix and Service Pack procedures will continue as usual. SPs and HFs will adopt the new release numbering scheme.

Q:  How can major and minor releases be differentiated?
A:  Product documentation for each product will specify explicitly whether the release is a “major” or “minor” release.
